Wisconsin’s House on the Rock is a popular tourist destination between Dodgeville and Spring Green. The “house” itself is atop the Deer Shelter Rock, a column of rock approximately 60 by 18 by 21 m (70 feet) by 61 m (200 feet) on the top that stands in a nearby forest. It was opened in 1959 and is a complex of architecturally distinct rooms, gardens, streets, and shops designed by Alex Jordan Jr. Over the course of several decades, the original structure was modified, and additional buildings were constructed.
Neil Gaiman is the most well-known author and musical group to have been influenced by The House on the Rock. In his 2001 novel American Gods and its 2017 television series, both of which were based on it, Gaiman used it as an important plot point. In a dream sequence, the carousel and Infinity Room of the house is featured in the 2017 movie “American Fable.”
The House was also used to shoot the music video for “More Than This” by 10,000 Maniacs in 1997.
